M5.3: Discussion: Enhancing Community Understanding

As a healthcare leader, one of your most challenging tasks may be to share important, or even upsetting, information with your community. Think back to when you’ve been the recipient of information from a health official, even recently, when you may have heard updates about coronavirus spread or new reports on climate change. Reflect on how this message resonated with you (or not) and how you think it could have been delivered more effectively. With that scenario firm in mind, let’s move to our reflection question this week.
Application Question:
1. First, find a social media posting or news story that spreads misinformation about a health or public health topic in a community – perhaps your own community (U.S) The misinformation may be subtle or flagrant. The post should be no more than 3 months old. Share the link (or for social media, you may want to share a screenshot).
2. Lastly, in your role as a leader, write or record an evidence-based response to the author of the post or story. Think about whether you want to persuade on the facts, debunk a myth, or if you have some other goal in your communication. Be very professional in your communication.
